Wildlife Wonders Apollo Bay: A Great Ocean Road Day Trip for Melbourne Families
Wildlife Wonders is an expansive, 30-acre wildlife sanctuary on the Great Ocean Road, 7 minutes from Apollo Bay and around 2.5 hours from Melbourne. It's a great ‘family day out’ option along the coast, offering guided walking tours through free-roaming native wildlife. There are no enclosures, no zoo-style exhibits here!
Good for: families with kids aged 0–15+, prams and wheelchairs (the 1.4km path is step-free).
Time needed: 75-90 minutes for the guided tour, or a half-day when combined with the onsite Emu Cafe and Visitor Centre (with a nature filled Book & Gift Shop).
Cost: Walk with Wildlife Tour from $59 adult / $24 child, with a family rate of $149 for 2 adults + 2 children
What you'll see: The animals are all free roaming, so each tour is different. On our Walk with Wildlife tour, it’s likely you may spot koalas, kangaroos, emus, wallabies, and - on Dusk Discovery tours - the possibility of also spotting some nocturnal species like potoroos and bandicoots.
Is Wildlife Wonders good for a family day out?
Yes. The sanctuary is designed around small guided groups, wireless headsets so kids can hear the guide clearly, and loan binoculars to keep them actively engaged rather than just walking and looking. It combines easily with a full day in Apollo Bay - many families do the tour in the morning, lunch after the tour at our Emu Cafe (and a locally roasted coffee of course), and the beach in the afternoon.
What do other parents say about visiting with kids?
Melbourne family blog Tot Hot or Not published a detailed parent's review after visiting Wildlife Wonders, covering tour options, pricing, accessibility and practical tips for visiting with young children.
Inside the Research Base on your tour, kids can compare their arm span to the wingspan of native birds.
On your tour, you are provided binoculars that the kids will love using to spot wildlife as you move through the Sanctuary.
